DAPHNE COWEN NDD ATD

Although she studied textiles at Liverpool College of Art, embroidery was not part of the course. However, it is in this area that Daphne has specialised in recent years. She was in charge of textiles at Chester College before her last full time teaching post at Moreton Hall, Oswestry.
Since then she has enjoyed experimenting with various textile skills, developing ideas using both hand and machine embroidery, often working on silk paintings and using quilting and collage techniques. Much of her recent work depicts the changing Welsh landscape which she loves and in which she has lived for nearly forty years.

Her work has been shown at The Grosvenor Museum, Chester; The Royal International Pavilion, Llangollen; The Clwydian Art Exhibition at Ruthin Town Hall; The Ruthin and Llandudno Libraries; The Silk Top Hat Gallery at Ludlow; Penrhyn Castle; Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw, Llanbedrog, the Cambrian, Conwy; Erddig Hall, Wrexham and elsewhere.
Her picture was chosen for “the Welsh Artist of the Year“ Exhibition at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff in 2003 and she has received awards at Theatr Clwyd; North Wales Open; Llangollen Open and at Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw at Llanbedrog. In June 2007 she was awarded 2nd. Prize in the Embroiderers Guild Competition with a hand embroidered collage, entitled “Snowdonia.”

Recently Daphne has created a series of watercolours, also inspired by the landscapes of Wales. These are included in her exhibition at Erddig Hall, Wrexham from August 21st until September !st.

Daphne is a member of the North Wales Fine Art Society and was awarded the Members Prize in 2009. She has work in their exhibition at Penrhyn Castle from Augusy 26th until September 27th 2010. She is presently showing at the Clwydian Art Society in their 50th anniversary exhibition at Y Capel, Llangollen until September 27th.
